Great question! We get asked this question pretty often, so we thought we should share our thoughts here!
There are several factors to consider when making this decision. Venue, location, and budget are, what we feel, the main points to think about.
Venue
Many venues actually provide a coordinator with their wedding day package. If so, fabulous! They know the ins and outs of planning a wedding there, and can make your life so much more simple. If you have the option of hiring your venue’s coordinator or not, we typically recommend that you do. Keep in mind that your venue isn’t there just to serve as a pretty backdrop for your wedding. They have worked hard to ensure that they provide you with an incredible experience, not just on your wedding day, so let them help you! You’ll be so glad you did!
Location
If you are planning a wedding out of town, out of state, or especially a destination wedding, then YES you need to hire a coordinator! It’s challenging enough to plan a wedding in the city where you live and have the ability to tour venues, meet with your vendors. We cannot stress enough how valuable your wedding experience is (from the time your fiancé places the ring on your finger until you return from your honeymoon), and you will run yourself ragged trying to plan a wedding yourself from afar.
Budget
You may be thinking “Well, I don’t have a very big budget, so I’ll just nix the coordinator and do it myself.” If that’s the case, then hold on a second! If budget is your concern, please do this for us. Spend some time day dreaming of your wedding. What elements are the very most important to you? Venue, photography, florals, a designer gown, elaborate reception lighting? Make a list of your top 5 priorities. If you have no idea what your want or who to hire, a planner would be very beneficial to you! If you do know what you want, but don’t have a clue where to start and your blood pressure is going up just at the thought of it… a planner is probably for you! But back on the budget train, you need to determine if hiring a coordinator will cause you to give up any of your tip top priorities. If so, then we would suggest contacting a very trustworthy friend (not a family member!) who is organized, punctual, and preferably has experience in coordinating events, to help you with the planning and to be the coordinator on the wedding day.
We hope this is helpful! Have a fabulous Wednesday!
